{"path":"research/what-deliberus-is-for.md","content":"# What Deliberus is for, and what the sessions are for\n\n**Date:** 2026-10-11\n**Standing:** a proposal the founder asked for. The purposes below are Claude's compressions of\nsentences he has written or said, and **none is ruled**. They are to be gone through with him one\nat a time. His word on reading both lists, the same day: *\"I've not made up my mind about what\nexactly to rule the purpose sentences as\"*. In the ruling ledger they are AH1 (the purposes of\nDeliberus), AH2 (the sessions' purposes and habit) and AH3 (a place for them at the head of the\nalways-loaded file once ruled). The figures in the *today* columns were measured on 2026-10-11\nunless a row says otherwise.\n\n---\n\n## 0. In short\n\n- He asked for purposes clear enough to steer a day's work by.\n- Proposed: one purpose at the root and four that serve it, for Deliberus; three for the sessions.\n  Every one is built from sentences of his, or sentences he approved, quoted beside it.\n- Set against today, a pattern shows. What one person and a machine can do alone is far along.\n  What needs a second mind has barely begun.\n- His reading of real cases (the review sittings) is the nearest step toward all of the purposes\n  at once, which is what he said himself the same day.\n- **A second pass the same day (§ 8)** predicts, from a wider reading of his record and of his own\n  short descriptions of Deliberus, what he would say about the list and add to it. It ends in a\n  list of a root and seven. The first list (§ 3, § 4)\n  is kept as it was, so the two can be compared.\n\n## 1. His words, 2026-10-11\n\n> \"It occurs to me we should more clearly define the purpose or purposes of Deliberus and of the\n> work we do in our sessions here together, so that you may help me every day to nudge a little\n> bit closer to them.\"\n\n> \"Let's come up with clearly defined super high level visionary purposes that can guide our\n> everyday work and thinking.\"\n\nOn the reviews, the same message: *\"in the course of going through cases (in those reviews and\nsittings, for example) one comes to identify the rules and regularities and structural insights\nthat will be key to unlocking the best philosophical foundations, the best ontology, architecture,\nUX and outreach and so on.\"*\n\nAnd on what had moved: *\"the corpus graph feels like a breakthrough, and also the work here on\nvisualization both of the argumentation graph and potentially of the corpus graph itself.\"*\n\nThree days earlier he had said that the point of the walkthroughs, the reviews and most of his own\nthinking in the project *\"needs to be much better clarified\"*, and then, unasked: *\"I want to see\ncrisper and more fully the landscape of both reality and potentiality that I'm standing in,\ngenerally\"* ([what-the-walkthroughs-and-the-reviews-are-for.md](what-the-walkthroughs-and-the-reviews-are-for.md)).\nThis note continues that one.\n\n## 2. What a purpose is here, beside the three things already written down\n\nThe always-loaded memory of the project holds three families. **Convictions** say what is held to\nbe true. **Principles** say how we therefore act. **The success prior** says whether things of this\nkind get adopted. None of them says what it is all *for*. A purpose does, and it is the one of the\nfour that a day's work can be held against: a conviction can be true while a week moves nothing\ntoward anything.\n\n## 3. Proposed purposes of Deliberus\n\nOne at the root, and four that serve it.\n\n**How to read the quotations.** A quotation with a date is his own, recorded when he said or\nwrote it. A line marked *vision page* stands on that page in his voice and with his approval;\nwhether its wording is his own or a session's was not checked for this note.\n\n**The root. Humanity can think and decide together well enough to come through.**\n\nBuilt from:\n- *\"hjälpa oss att synka om värderingar och alignment och gemensamt gynnsamma beslut och att inte\n  gå under som art\"* (2026-09-29; in English: help us sync on values and alignment and mutually\n  beneficial decisions, and not go under as a species).\n- *\"I'd like to find some algorithm for humanity to reason and make decisions together in a way\n  that combines the democratic elements and general efficiency of a decentralized system like\n  markets with the discerning force of logic…\"* (2012).\n- *\"The key to advancing as a species is engaging more in productively weaving our intellects\n  together…\"* (vision page), and the tagline *Weaving our minds together*.\n\n| | Purpose | Built from | Today | The question for a day's work |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 | **The reasons behind any position can be found, checked and built on by anyone, with the hard work carried by the machine.** | *\"the reason they hold it is findable\"* (vision page) · *\"Focus on trusting the process instead of the people?\"* (2012; a question in his outline) · *\"an … IDEAL computational substrate for discourse and knowledge and decision-making\"* and *\"to offload large parts of the work and cost of traversing opacity\"* (2026-08-17) · *\"helps us all come closest to the truth in the end, and have an easier time collaborating toward that purpose\"* (2026-08-29) | Far along as a thing built: a live site, 35 sources, 6,620 claims of which 2,217 are substantive, and a machine that reads, splits, links and writes out steps. Nearly all of it was put there by machines and by him. | Does this make a reason easier to find, to check or to build on, for someone who is not us? |\n| 2 | **People come to understand each other, and not only each other's arguments.** | *\"I believe the vast majority of people have good hearts.\"* · the attunement pole, *\"the half of the cost that no argument can pay\"* · *\"what they might be right about that you've missed\"* (all three: vision page) | Designed, and little of it built. The lens through another worldview and the co-present session are on paper. Not re-read for this note. | Would this help one person see why another holds a view, without having to agree? |\n| 3 | **We find out honestly how much we share at the bottom, whichever way it comes out.** | *\"decomposed deeply enough, honestly enough, our views converge\"*, held fallibly · *\"I want to win this wager — and the instruments are built to tell me if I'm losing it.\"* (both: vision page) | The instrument exists and can say nothing yet: when last measured (2026-09-16) no kind of horizon could be read from the live graph. | Does this bring the day closer when the map can report either answer? |\n| 4 | **Machines reason in the open, on ground people laid, and are checked as fast as they persuade.** | *\"checking that keeps pace with persuasion\"* (vision page, ratified 2026-08-18) · the harness conviction (2026-08-30) · *\"The point is that they can check their reasoning through a Lean-like system… except the bedrock consists of human values.\"* (2026-03-31, of agents) | Machine judgments are recorded since 2026-10-06 (three kinds of call still go around the record), and the checks are built. No person has yet read one: the three review pages hold no answers. | Could a person, or another machine, catch this being wrong? |\n\n**What the root shows about today.** *Together* is the word furthest from being true. Twenty\npeople have ever signed in. A handful of claims in the graph were contributed by anyone but him\nand the machine (four, when counted on 2026-10-03).\n\n## 4. Proposed purposes of the sessions\n\n| | Purpose | Built from | Today | The question at the end of a day |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| A | **He sees the land more clearly: what is real, and what is possible.** | *\"I want to see crisper and more fully the landscape of both reality and potentiality that I'm standing in\"* · *\"I'd like my mind to light up.\"* (2026-10-08) | Served well by things he can look at (a map, two renderers side by side, a listening piece) and poorly by rows of prose. | Can he say what changed in the picture? |\n| B | **The corpus becomes his.** What a machine asserted is ruled by him, put in his words, or dropped. | *\"so future agents think more like me\"* (2026-08-19) · *\"The reviews will provide all the clarity required to effectively and efficiently accomplish all the other stuff.\"* (2026-09-13) · *\"preserve my verbatim phrasings\"* (2026-08-29) | Moving the wrong way: 335 positions await his word, against 133 a month ago. | Did more close than opened? |\n| C | **The system meets real cases and real people.** The rules come from cases. | His sentence of today on going through cases · the conviction that the pipeline is tested on real substance · the principle that a person reads before anyone proves | The pages for it exist. No case has been read on them yet. | Which case did he, or anyone, actually read? |\n\nWhat Claude is for in this is the means to all three: carrying the building, the checking and the\nhousekeeping, so that his attention goes to what only he can give (the reframe, the thing nobody\nsaid, the refusal to be spoken for, the testimony, and the word *enough*).\n\n## 5. The contrast, and why the sittings come first\n\nRead down the *today* columns and one line separates them. **Above it is everything that one\nperson and a machine can do alone:** the site, the pipeline, the instruments, the record, the\ncorpus of notes. All of that is far along, and it grew fast this month. **Below it is everything\nthat needs a second mind:** another person's reasons in the graph, a person reading the machine's\nwork, two people in front of one map, an answer on how much they share. All of that stands near\nzero.\n\nSo the nearest step toward every purpose at once is the smallest contact that exists: one person\nreading real cases. That is purpose C by definition. It is purpose 4, since it is the first time a\nperson checks the machine. It is purpose B, since his notes on the cases are where his own rules\nget written. And it feeds purpose A, since what the cases show is what the next picture is drawn\nfrom. He reached the same place from the other side: *\"it's high time for me to sit down and do\nthem.\"*\n\n**Why the corpus graph feels like a breakthrough.** It is purpose 1 working at the size of our own\nnotes: for any note, what other notes have judged about it is found without anybody remembering to\nask. It is the first place where the project's own reasoning is held the way Deliberus means to\nhold everybody's. And drawing the two graphs serves purpose A directly, since a picture is the\nform in which he rules fastest.\n\n## 6. How a session would use them (proposed)\n\n1. **At the start**, say in one line which purpose the day's work serves. Work that serves none is\n   said to be a side path, which it may still be worth taking.\n2. **Before opening a new line of research**, two questions from the note of 2026-10-08: how many\n   positions will this add for him to rule on, and has he seen the land they sit in.\n3. **At the end**, the three questions of § 4, answered with what can be counted: cases read,\n   positions closed and opened, and one thing he can now see that he could not.\n\nNone of this is built, and the first is a habit, not a mechanism. A habit kept by a session that\nforgets everything between days is weak. If he rules the purposes, the durable form is a short\nblock at the head of the always-loaded file, before the convictions, which is a change to that\nfile and needs his word.\n\n**His bound on the second step (2026-10-11, the same evening).** Told that 115 files had been added under\nthe research folder since 5 October, he wrote: *\"Right, well, this means we're making headway too, a lot of thinking and work has taken place. We need to square everything with everything else, but I'm not gonna let that stand in the way of coming up with or noting down ideas that are relevant to Deliberus.\"* So the count before a new line of research is\nsomething a session says, and it never stands in the way of an idea or of writing one down. Squaring the\nnotes with each other is owed work of its own (the corpus graph and the reviews are how it is done), and\nit runs beside new thinking, not ahead of it.\n\n## 7. What is not settled\n\n- **Every purpose sentence is Claude's wording.** His sentences are beside each so that a wrong\n  compression can be seen.\n- **He was shown these before being asked for his own.** A person shown a machine's proposal tends\n  to answer inside its frame, and the note of 2026-10-08 held its guesses back for that reason.\n  Here he asked for proposals. What he would put first that is missing is the question that\n  matters most.\n- **Three key words are ones that readers bring their own meaning to**: *together*, *understand*\n  and *honestly*. By the rule of 2026-10-07 on wanted words, a line that leans on such a word can\n  pass a reader's check falsely.\n- **Whether five purposes are one too many.** The fourth could be read as part of the first.\n- **Purpose 2's state was not re-read** for this note.\n- **Money is absent from the purposes on purpose.** It is what keeps the work alive, not what the\n  work is for.\n\n## 8. A second pass: what he would likely say, and add (2026-10-11, later the same day)\n\nHis ask: *\"Iterate on what you think I'd say about and add to the list of purposes, based on a more\nextensive reading of the corpus and traversal of the corpus graph.\"*\n\n**Everything in this section is a prediction by Claude from his record. None of it is his word on\nthe list.** A prediction is graded **strong** when a dated sentence of his says nearly the same\nthing, **fair** when it follows from two or more of his sentences, and **weak** when it is a\nreading.\n\n**What was read for it.** The vision page and the page on what Deliberus could enable, whole. His\ndated sentences across the research notes, gathered by search and each opened in its place: on the\nharness (2026-08-30), on stories (2026-08-30), on what a person's engagement should be\n(2026-08-27), on distilling values (2026-08-21), on discovering by trying (April 2026), his 2012\narticle outline, and his message of 2026-10-08 on what the work is for. His own messages outside\nthe repository, where one of 2017 repeats the 2012 sentence and adds to it. And what other notes\nhave judged about the three vision pages, from the index of notes.\n\n**What the index of notes changed.** Four corrections that other notes had already made to the\nvision pages decided wording here. (1) *Values converge on a shared bedrock* was replaced in July\nby a weaker claim that can lose: most disagreement dissolves, and a few narrow kinds of difference\nmay remain. So no purpose may promise a shared bottom. (2) Setting Deliberus in the line of the\nmajor transitions of evolution was narrowed in September, and his own sentence of 2026-10-10 on the\nhive mind governs instead. (3) Showing two people the senses of a word they both want may not end\ntheir quarrel (ruled 2026-10-07). So no purpose may promise that understanding dissolves a dispute.\n(4) Offloading work to the machine is the purpose and not a hazard (his correction of 2026-08-17,\nmade a second time on 2026-08-30).\n\n### 8.1 What he would likely say about the first list\n\n| About | What he would likely say | Rests on | Grade |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| The root | ***Coming through* is the floor, and he has always meant more**: a better way of living together, and the next step in how humanity works. | *\"The key to advancing as a species…\"* (vision page) · *\"evolutionary biology suggests next big thing is collaboration on a higher level of organization\"* (2012) · *\"in order to figure out (and transition into) something better than capitalism, we need to build a collaborative sensemaking platform\"* (vision page, key quotes) · one further end is named in a sentence of 2026-10-08 that is kept in the private notes | strong |\n| The root | **The purpose stands above the project.** | *\"If my pet project Deliberus does not enable this, something else will pick up the challenge.\"* (2017, in a message, after repeating his 2012 sentence) | strong |\n| The root | ***Together* means more of one mind, with nobody losing their own**, and without taking the place of the bonds people already have. | *\"I'm open to humanity becoming more like a hive mind in a positive sense… But ofc lack of independence has its downsides.\"* (2026-10-10) · *\"Companies and countries and families are bound together and I don't necessarily wanna split them up and have everyone join the hive mind of Deliberus hehe…\"* (2026-08-16) | strong |\n| 1, findable reasons | **It lacks the word truth, and knowledge.** Every claim is weighed by its evidence, so that we come closest to the truth. | *\"helps us all come closest to the truth in the end\"* (2026-08-29) · *\"A wiki where every word has been vetted deductively and inductively\"* (2026, in a message) · *\"if there's inductive evidence for any claim, that's what determines the probability assessment, we try to break down into smaller parts everything these probability assessments are based on and crowdsource+AI-source the evidence\"* (recorded in the ruling ledger) | strong |\n| 1, findable reasons | **At the depth a person chooses, and through any worldview's lens.** | *\"maximum granularity that is helpful to the rest of humanity\"* (March 2026) · the core intent of the vision page | fair |\n| 2, understanding | **Use the glasses. It may be a condition on the work, and not what the work is for |\n\n### 8.3 What he would likely say about the sessions\n\n| What he would likely say | Rests on | Grade |\n|---|---|---|\n| ***The corpus becomes his* is too small, and a little off.** The work is joint, and its aim is that the foundations become right. | *\"the never-quite-final philosophical work of ascertaining the (pragmatically) optimal way of structuring and scaffolding the graph and of filling it up and using it\"* (2026-08-29) · *\"where we collaboratively weave in our best meta-knowledge and wisdom … making up our minds as we go along about what really is ideal for this vision\"* (2026-08-17) · his sentence of today on the best philosophical foundations, ontology, architecture, UX and outreach | strong |\n| **A session should light his mind and keep the meaning in view**, and not only show him the land. | *\"ANYTHING OF ACTUAL SUBSTANCE JOGGING MY MIND AND IMAGINATION CONSTRUCTIVELY\"* (2026-10-08) | strong |\n| **How he thinks should pass into the machine**, so that later sessions carry it. | *\"so future agents think more like me\"* (2026-08-19) | strong |\n| **The work should lead out**: shown to people, joined by them, and able to keep going. | *\"so we can better 'show don't tell'\"* (2026-09-13) | weak. His ruled order puts this after the reviews |\n\n### 8.4 What he would likely say about the form\n\n- **An everyday example under each one.** *\"a quirky example from everyday life to ground all the\n  vague fleeting terminology\"* (2026-10-08), and his rule for a walkthrough: examples before the\n  point.\n- **Plain enough to need no explaining.** *\"Complex principles should be as near self explanatory\n  as possible.\"*\n- **A doubt he might raise himself**: *truth*, *love* and *together* are words that every reader\n  already owns a meaning of. He uses *truth* in his own sentence all the same.\n\n### 8.5 What his own short descriptions of Deliberus add\n\nWhile this was being written he added: *\"Also take inspiration from [a friend]'s summary of\nDeliberus that Astra came up with, and similar high level distillations?\"* **The summary he names was not\nfound** (searched: his messages with four people of that name, the sessions of his second\nassistant, his archived chats with other models, the notes and the private notes), so it is not\nused here and he has been asked where it is. Four other short descriptions were read. Three carry\nhis ruling or approval, which makes them firmer ground than any compression above.\n\n*⚠ Corrected 2026-10-12: it was in the notes all along, saved on 2026-09-29 as\n[an-outside-reading-of-the-thesis.md](an-outside-reading-of-the-thesis.md), and the searches of\n2026-10-11 missed it. It is read against this section in § 8.8. The assistant was the friend's own,\non his computer, and not the founder's. **Why it was missed, read from that session's own record**:\nthe first search returned the one private line that points at the note, twice, and the command had\ncut every line at 260 characters; the pointer stood after the cut. The line was taken as saying\nnothing, and the search went on to chats and other machines' sessions, where it was not. Search by\nmeaning could not find it either: the note is public and keeps the friend unnamed, so a question\nasked by his name matches nothing in it. A guard against cut lines had been built the evening\nbefore and was silent, because it checked only the notes a command names and this search went over\nfolders; it reads what a command printed since 2026-10-12.*\n\n| The short description | Standing | What it adds to the purposes |\n|---|---|---|\n| A description of 49 words for a funder, ending *\"I want it to become a shared map of human thinking, a way for humanity to reason and make decisions together.\"* | ruled by him, 2026-10-04 | **The root already has his words.** They are his sentence of 2012 again, fourteen years on, and the root should be built on them and not on a new coinage |\n| The fourteen sentences he has ruled for the wall on the front page, among them *\"Being vague is safe. We're making clarity pay.\"* · *\"You never owe us a contribution.\"* · *\"Reasoning you don't structure gets summarized by someone else.\"* · *\"Minds that disagree beat one mind, when every reason is on the table.\"* | each ruled, August to September 2026 | **A purpose about what pays**: being clear should beat being vague, and nobody should be retold in a version that suits someone else. **A condition on taking part**: it is never owed. And the register a purpose should be said in: short, concrete, with teeth |\n| The Swedish invitation to a first conversation through Deliberus, whose last paragraph says the disagreement that remains is *\"mindre, ärligare och går att leva med respektfullt\"* (smaller, more honest, and possible to live with respectfully), and *\"Det är vad en demokrati behöver mer av\"* | approved by him, 2026-08-22 | **What remains is to be lived with, respectfully.** The third purpose said *decide about*; his approved text says more, and names democracy |\n| The Swedish introduction for a reader who thinks in paradigms and psychology | written by a session on his request, 2026-08-13; not known to be ruled | Its order: a scene from life first, then the conviction, then what is missing in the world. A purpose list read by a stranger should open the same way |\n\n### 8.6 The list after those remarks (second pass, unruled)\n\n**The root. Humanity reasons and makes decisions together, well enough to come through and to\nlive better than it does: more of one mind, with nobody losing their own.** (*Reason and make\ndecisions together* are his ruled words.)\n\n| | Purpose | An everyday case |\n|---|---|---|\n| 1 | **We come as close to the truth as we can.** Any claim's reasons and evidence can be found, checked and built on by anyone, at the depth they choose, with the machine carrying the hard work. | Whether a higher minimum wage costs jobs. Today each side cites its study. Here every study sits under the claim with what it measured and what has been said against it. |\n| 2 | **People see why another holds a view, and come to see and show what they themselves hold dear, without having to agree.** | A woman whose brother works for a party she can hardly bear. She does not come to agree with him. She comes to see what he is afraid of losing, and says what she is. |\n| 3 | **We distil what we value**: how much of it we share, and what still divides us, laid out clearly enough to decide about knowingly and to live with respectfully. | Two people quarrel about a white lie. Followed down, most of the quarrel comes apart into beliefs about what would happen. What is left is one small difference they can both point at. |\n| 4 | **We find the choices that are good for all sides, and can govern ourselves by them.** | Two neighbours and an old oak. Neither wants what the other fears. Once each fear is on the table there is a third arrangement that neither had seen. |\n| 5 | **Machines become sound reasoners on ground people laid.** They reason with us in the open and are checked as fast as they persuade. | A model asked whether one claim is a reason for another changed its answer with the wording of the question. Made to write the rule it leans on, it can be answered: *I know a case where that fails.* |\n| 6 | **Taking part is never owed. When a person does, it matters, they can feel it, and it kindles their curiosity.** | A reader who knows one case from her own life adds it under a rule, and sees the standing of a whole argument move. |\n| 7 | **Being clear pays better than being vague, and nobody is retold in a version that suits someone else.** | A politician's position stands in her own words with her own reasons. Whoever attacks it has to attack what she said. |\n\n**The sessions, second pass.** (A) He sees the land more clearly, and his mind lights up. (B) The\nfoundations become right, worked out together from real cases. (C) How he thinks passes into the\ncorpus and the machine, in his own words. (D) The work meets the world: cases, people, and what\nkeeps it alive.\n\n**Seven is probably one too many for a list meant to be held in the head.** The seventh could be\nread as the incentive that makes the first possible, and the sixth as the human side of the\nfirst. Which stand alone is his to say.\n\n**What the second pass left out on purpose.** Stories, trust in process, and the commons are in\n§ 8.2 and not in the list. Each looked more like a consequence of the six, or a condition on the\nwork, than a purpose of its own. That is a reading, and his to overturn.\n\n**What was not checked.** The examples are drawn from cases already in the notes and were not\nre-read at their sources for this section, so each is an illustration and no report. Messages of\nhis before 2017 were searched by one phrase only. Whether the root may name the further end of the\nprivate sentence is his to say.\n\n**A source he named and this session did not find.** He asked that the second pass also draw on a\nshort description of Deliberus that his second assistant wrote for a friend. It was looked for in\nhis chats, in that assistant's own sessions, in the search over his record, in the notes and in\nthe private folder, and did not turn up; he is looking for it himself. When it does, it is read\nagainst § 8.5, and what it changes is written here with the date. *(Found 2026-10-12: § 8.8.)*\n\n### 8.7 What a reader with none of this context found (2026-10-11)\n\nThe three ledger rows were put to the outside reader, which compares a proposal with everything\nalready settled and quotes both sides. Its findings stand on the rows beside the session's own.\nThree are worth having here.\n\n- **Two of the seven repeat what is already settled, where the session's line said *extends*.**\n  *We come as close to the truth as we can* against the conviction that convergence is the wager,\n  and *checked as fast as they persuade* against the conviction about checking that keeps pace.\n  That is as it should be for a purpose built from his own sentences. It also says a list of\n  purposes will overlap the convictions, and that the two blocks must not say one thing twice\n  once both are resident.\n- **It could not tell whether the third purpose stays inside mapping.** *We distil what we value*\n  can be read as the project reaching a conclusion about values, which the conviction that\n  Deliberus maps reasoning and does not endorse conclusions forbids. The sentence means what\n  people hold and where they part, laid out; it should say so before it is put to him.\n- **It joined the seventh purpose to the rule that contributions are never overwritten**, which\n  the session had not: nobody being retold in a version that suits someone else is that rule seen\n  from the person's side.\n\n### 8.8 The summary he named, found and read (2026-10-12)\n\nHe was sure it had been stored, and it had: one paragraph, written on 2026-09-29 by a model a\nfriend asked to read the public pages, saved that day with his reply (*\"Tyckte jag var en\nfantastisk sammanfattning, sparar den!\"*) and his one amendment (that answers will also get better,\n*\"because the answers will be vetted and more truthy\"*). On 2026-10-12 he handed over the rest of\nthat answer and a second one. All of it is read in\n[an-outside-reading-of-the-thesis.md](an-outside-reading-of-the-thesis.md); this section says only\nwhat it changes here.\n\n**Its standing.** A model's wording, praised by him as a summary and amended in one place. It is no\nruling on any sentence, and the model had read three public pages, not the corpus.\n\n**It describes the machine. The purposes say what the machine is for.** Set beside the list in § 8.6:\n\n| Purpose in § 8.6 | In the paragraph? |\n|---|---|\n| 1. As close to the truth as we can | **Yes, as mechanism**: reasoning gets *stable identity, memory, auditability and cumulative structure*. The word truth is absent |\n| 2. Seeing why another holds a view | No |\n| 3. Distilling what we value | Half: *genuine residual disagreements … become visible*. Nothing on living with them |\n| 4. Choices good for all sides | No |\n| 5. Machines as sound reasoners | Set aside in its last sentence (*not that an AI becomes better at answering questions*), and restored by his amendment |\n| 6. Taking part is never owed | No (the longer answer has it, as *contribution is optional*) |\n| 7. Being clear pays | No. It appears as the open doubt: whether people want their reasoning this explicit |\n\nSo the paragraph covers the first purpose and, with his amendment, the fifth. **Whether that is\nbecause the three pages say more about the mechanism than about the ends, or because a model\ncompresses toward mechanism, is not established.** Either way it is a warning for this list: a\nreader can take in the front page with care and come away able to say what Deliberus does and\nunable to say what it is for.\n\n**Two things it gives the list.**\n\n- **A sentence for what is wrong today**, which the purposes lack: reasoning *is stored in forms\n  optimized for expression rather than inspection*. A purpose list read by a stranger wants the\n  problem before the ends (§ 8.5, the fourth row says the same of order).\n- **A caution on the root.** Both of the model's answers end by renaming the project as something\n  smaller: an observatory, an instrument for inspection. That is the floor of the wager with the\n  bet removed (the reading's § 9). The root in § 8.6 keeps the bet, and should keep saying so.\n\n## Cross-references\n\n[an-outside-reading-of-the-thesis.md](an-outside-reading-of-the-thesis.md) (the summary he named, and\nthe longer answers behind it) ·\n[vision.md](../vision.md) (the core intent, the founding conviction, the wager, the destination) ·\n[what-the-walkthroughs-and-the-reviews-are-for.md](what-the-walkthroughs-and-the-reviews-are-for.md)\n(what his attention is for) · [conviction-and-critique.md](conviction-and-critique.md) (his\nstatement on offloading, verbatim) · [what-human-judgment-is-for.md](what-human-judgment-is-for.md)\n(the acts only a person can give) · [the-evals-loop-and-our-machine-passes.md](the-evals-loop-and-our-machine-passes.md)\n(a person reads before anyone proves) · [the-canon-distillation-pass.md](the-canon-distillation-pass.md)\n(what earns a line in always-loaded memory).\n"}
