The phenomenological warning is our extraction hazard, stated in 1945\n\nMerleau-Ponty's charge against \"reflective analysis\": it **\"substitutes a reconstruction of\nexperience for a description of it\"** — reflection claims to describe what was there and in fact\nrebuilds it in its own image. That is the extraction pipeline's exact hazard, named eighty years\nbefore the disagreement-preservation instrument was built to measure it: every pass that turns\nsomeone's living position into claims is a reconstruction presenting itself as a description, and\nthe convergence-illusion threat is what happens when the reconstruction drifts flattering-ward and\nnobody can tell.\n\nHis remedy transfers too. **Radical reflection** is reflection \"conscious of its own dependence on\nan unreflected life\" — reflection that knows its ground and says so. In corpus vocabulary: an\nextraction that carries its provenance, its source spans and its omissions ledger is radical\nreflection; one that presents its output as simply *what was said* is reflective analysis\npretending to be description. **The confession principle is radical reflection as an engineering\nrequirement.**\n\n## 2. Marcel's two reflections are the two poles, from a third tradition\n\nMarcel (1951): **primary reflection** divides, abstracts, solves problems at a distance;\n**secondary reflection** reunifies what primary reflection separated, and reconnects with what\ncannot be made a problem — and primary reflection alone yields \"a false picture of things, one that\nis overly abstract.\" Substitute the corpus's words and it reads: analysis decomposes; attunement\nreunifies; analysis without attunement in proportion is the failure mode. This is now the third\nindependent tradition to land on the analysis–attunement dialectic in two days of reading\n(Zurn/Bassett's care-inside-curiosity, Marcel's secondary reflection, and the corpus's own\nMcGilchrist grounding) — worth exactly one line in the dialectic's home doc, no more.\n\n## 3. Two emblems worth adopting, because they compress standing findings\n\n- **Echo is the sycophant.** The nymph who \"cannot say things of her own,\" condemned to repeat the\n  last part of what others say — and Narcissus, offered a partner who can only reflect him back,\n  does not want her. An approval-trained model is Echo: reflection without a position. The\n  harness conviction's whole point is that Echo is what market selection produces, and grounding\n  is what gives the voice something of its own to say.\n- **Narcissus at the pool is same-hand bias.** The hosts' own closing joke lands the emblem: *\"us\n  listening to our own episodes is the modern-day version of Narcissus.\"* A system checking itself\n  sees a judgment in the pool and cannot tell whether it is an independent confirmation or its own\n  face — the misrecognition reading of the myth (David's: Narcissus's failure is not vanity but\n  **failing to recognise the reflection as himself**) is precisely the failure of a checker that\n  does not know it shares the generator's blind spots. The two-family jury is the design answer:\n  a second face at the pool.\n\nAnd Henrich-on-Fichte gives the deep version: **the self cannot be a product of reflection because\nreflection presupposes it.** Transferred: a system's checking cannot constitute its own ground —\nratification presupposes a ratifier whose judgment the system did not manufacture, which is the\nratification tether and *never ask a mind to audit its own frame* stated from German idealism.\n\n## 4. The animal uncertainty test is confession-channel incentive design, measured\n\nThe metacognition research the episode closes on: animals (rats, macaques, dolphins, chimpanzees)\ntrained on a discrimination task with a third lever — *not sure* — that pays a **smaller but\npositive** reward. As difficulty rises, they press it: the rational move for any agent that can\nmonitor its own uncertainty. The design lesson is sharper than the corpus has stated it:\n**a confession channel exists only if confessing pays.** `does_not_fit` with a required note,\n`undecided` as a first-class verdict, the unclassified-rate as a published number — these work as\nconfession channels precisely to the degree that the honest *not sure* is cheaper than a forced\nguess for the one pressing the lever (human or model). A pipeline that scores an LLM pass on\ncoverage alone has removed the third lever's reward, and will get guesses — the sacredness brake\nshipping inert and silent was a system with no third lever at all. Candidate rule, unruled: **every\nmachine pass gets scored so that a confessed *does-not-fit* strictly beats a wrong nearest-fit.**\n\n**First measured instance, 2026-09-11/12** (`scheme-set-exhaustiveness.md` § The three runs that made it fire): the argument-scheme taxonomy's `does_not_fit` value had fired 0 times in 3,666 edges. Explaining it moved the traffic to the *neighbouring costless shrug* (`default_inference`, 0 → 4 of 19) rather than to the alarm; only contrasting the two, so the alarm carried a meaning the shrug did not, produced the first firing. So the candidate is no longer only an inference from the animal lever: an available, even an explained, confession channel stays silent while a cheaper way of saying nothing sits beside it.\n\n## 5. One boundary kept\n\nThe episode's Narcissus reading also carries the distance argument — love requires a distance that\nself-relation cannot provide; Ellie's book thesis is that the self relates to itself as ambiguity,\nnot as an object in a pool. The transferable half stops at § 3's emblems; the corpus should not\nborrow the phenomenology of selfhood as authority for architecture decisions (the same discipline\nas assembly theory: take the mechanism where it is independently attested, never the metaphysics).\n\n---\n\nCross-references: [analysis-and-attunement.md](../analysis-and-attunement.md) (Marcel, one line) ·\n[the-harness-conviction.md](the-harness-conviction.md) (Echo; the failable check) ·\n[fragile-checkers-and-the-verification-bottleneck.md](fragile-checkers-and-the-verification-bottleneck.md)\n(same-hand; two-family jury) · [taxonomy-gaps-and-the-closed-enum.md](taxonomy-gaps-and-the-closed-enum.md)\n(the third lever, `does_not_fit`) · [cognitive-commons-and-deliberus.md](cognitive-commons-and-deliberus.md)\n(the ratification tether)\n"}
