{"path":"research/deep-descent-experiment/white-lies-descent.md","content":"# Deep Descent 1: The White Lie\n\n*Dogfood experiment, July 10 2026. Topic chosen deliberately non-meta and everyday, per the substance-over-meta testing principle. The entry claim was extracted on the live platform (`claim_a876a3f2302e`, group `deliberus_extraction`); the weighing opened with all eight critical questions instantiated. The Gemini balance then went too thin for the large decompose calls, so the descent below was hand-walked from the real graph root, run-3F style. The question: how far down does a small everyday moral intuition actually go, and what kind of thing is at the bottom?*\n\n## The surface\n\n**Seed** (authored): \"It is sometimes right to tell a small lie to spare another person's feelings. When the truth would only wound someone and change nothing, kindness matters more than strict honesty.\"\n\nThe pipeline extracted the load-bearing node cleanly: `claim_a876a3f2302e`, a **value_premise**, \"The moral value of being kind to others takes precedence over the moral value of maintaining absolute, strict honesty.\" The weighing detector fired (`argument_from_weighing` CQ7 already live: \"Can a covering value be named for what kindness and honesty are both instances of?\"). This is a weighing, and the descent is the weighing walked down.\n\n## Level 1: what is being weighed against what?\n\nThe claim weighs **kindness** against **honesty**. Neither is atomic. Decompose each into what it is actually protecting.\n\n**Honesty's value** is not one thing. It is at least four:\n- **H1 instrumental**: true beliefs let people act effectively on reality.\n- **H2 respect**: telling someone the truth treats them as a capable adult who can bear reality, rather than as someone to be managed.\n- **H3 trust**: a maintained practice of honesty is what makes any future word believable; a lie spends that capital.\n- **H4 integrity**: what lying does to the liar's own character, independent of any effect on the hearer.\n\n**Kindness's value here** is at least two:\n- **K1 hedonic protection**: sparing the person present, pointless pain.\n- **K2 care**: the relational good of being someone who shields those they love from needless suffering.\n\n## Level 2: the stipulations do real work\n\nThe seed stipulates two conditions: the truth \"would only wound\" and \"change nothing.\" Those are not framing; they are premises that **switch off specific sub-values**.\n\n- \"Change nothing\" switches off **H1**. If the truth enables no better action, its instrumental value is stipulated to zero. This is the single most important move, and it is exactly what makes white-lie cases feel permissible: the strongest, least controversial reason for honesty has been assumed away.\n- \"Only wound\" foregrounds **K1**.\n\nSo the weighing is not \"kindness versus honesty\" in general. After the stipulations, it is **K1 (spare present feeling) against the residue of honesty once its instrumental value is removed**: H2 (respect), H3 (trust), H4 (integrity).\n\n## Level 3: three of the four remaining strands decompose out\n\n- **H3 (trust) is empirical, not bedrock.** It reduces to a probabilistic claim: what is the chance of discovery, and what is the expected harm if discovered? A discovered protective lie inflicts the original pain plus a betrayal on top, which usually dominates. But this is a checkable, scope-bound consideration, not a value residue. It bottoms out in **empirical / scope**. (The seed quietly assumes non-discovery; naming that assumption is itself the decomposition.)\n- **H4 (integrity) is a different weighing, not part of this one.** Whether lying corrodes the liar regardless of outcome is a virtue-ethical question that opens its own branch (character versus consequence). It recurses, but sideways; it is not what this claim is standing on. Marked as a separate root.\n- **K2 (care) largely collapses into K1** once examined: the relational good of being a shielding person is parasitic on shielding actually being good for the person, which is the thing in question.\n\nWhat survives to the bottom of *this* branch is a single opposed pair: **K1 (spare present feeling) against H2 (respect for the person's capacity to bear their own reality).**\n\n## Level 4: the surviving clash, and a partial dissolution\n\nK1-versus-H2 looks like bedrock: the care-ethics intuition (love protects from pointless pain) against the Kantian intuition (respect never merely manages). One more push changes the picture.\n\n**Why does being managed-without-consent feel like a wrong at all**, even when it spares pain? Because it is a demotion of standing: it treats the person as a patient to be handled rather than an agent to be met. And the drive underneath *that* is the drive **to be seen and met as one actually is** (this is Rosa's resonance, and it is one of the founder's own load-bearing lenses: a relationship where you are managed rather than met is, in Rosa's terms, mute rather than resonant).\n\n**Why does sparing pain feel like a good?** The drive to protect from suffering.\n\nNow the partial dissolution. These two drives are **not cleanly opposed in the limit**, because a protective lie does not only spare pain: it also **isolates**. It leaves the person alone with a comforting falsehood, unmet, slightly less known than they were. So part of what presented as \"kindness versus respect\" was a **confusion about what kindness deeply is**: the deepest kindness *includes* being met, and a lie that protects at the cost of meeting is not purely kind. A measurable chunk of the apparent value-clash dissolves the way the convergence wager predicts: it was compressed confusion about the concept of kindness, not irreducible value-opposition.\n\n## The residue\n\nAfter the dissolution, something genuinely survives, and it is small and precisely stateable. In the **pure case** (the wound is real, nothing can be acted on, discovery is impossible, and we hold fixed that both people know love is present): does the value of **dying-or-living-without-this-particular-pain** exceed the value of **being-met-without-a-comforting-illusion**? Two people who share every sub-value above, who agree on all the facts, can still land on opposite sides, and each is defensible.\n\nThis is a **fittingness residue shading into a permissive zone**, and the descent cannot honestly collapse it further:\n- It is **fittingness** because it is a question about what response *fits* a person: is it more fitting to protect a beloved's peace or to honor their standing as one who can bear their own life?\n- It is **permissive-zone / parity** (in Ruth Chang's sense) because reason narrows the field, rules out the cruel and the cowardly answers, and then genuinely permits more than one landing. It is not that we lack information about which is better; it is that neither is better, worse, nor exactly equal. This is exactly the taxonomy split the philosophical-foundations stress test demanded: fittingness and permissive-zone are doing different work at this one leaf, and the platform currently has only the single blurred \"permissive zone\" box for it.\n\n## What the descent found\n\n1. **Decomposition shrank the clash.** An everyday moral intuition that presents as a values-collision turned out to be mostly (a) a stipulation switching off honesty's strongest reason, (b) an empirical trust-risk, (c) a sideways integrity branch, and (d) a conceptual confusion about what kindness includes. The genuinely irreducible residue is a fraction of the original apparent disagreement. This is one data point *for* the convergence wager, on object-level everyday material rather than a philosophy debate.\n2. **The residue is a blended type.** Fittingness-shading-into-parity: the single leaf needs the Chang four-way split the current taxonomy lacks, or it will be mis-typed as a flat \"permissive zone\" and lose the fittingness content.\n3. **A resolution operator beyond decomposition showed up.** The partial dissolution came not from splitting the claim but from **reframing what kindness is** (a new covering concept that both drives turn out to be instances of). That is the \"covering value\" move the weighing scheme's CQ7 asks for, working exactly as intended: naming the covering value is what let two-thirds of the clash dissolve.\n\nPredicted terminus, registered for the pipeline when the balance allows the decompose calls: **fittingness + permissive-zone (parity)**, small residue fraction, with an empirical sub-terminus on the trust branch and a sideways integrity branch. Not a bare value bedrock; a shrunk, blended, precisely located leaf.\n"}
